battery drop a lot in very short time on iphoneSE caseywang777 — Jun 10, 2018 01:41PM PDT
I started to use this app one week ago.
My phone is iphoneSE and the iOS version is 11.4
Myfitnesspal version is 22.214.171.12421
I found that myfitnesspal consumes battery very soon. I have this problem from I start to use myfitnesspal until now.
It is 1% battery in less than one minute in average when I use it.
I do not connect any external device to my iPhone and myfitnesspal.
I just use myfitnesspal to setup my food menu, input what I ate or browse what I ate before.
Any one know what this happens and how to solve this problem?
In addition, I only realize that myfitnesspal consumes the battery a lot when I open it.
If I do not open this app. I feel the battery consumption speed is normal.
I also check the battery section on my iPhone->general->battery
It shows that myfitnesspal spend 13% battery in the past 24 hours(14min in the foreground and 15 minutes in the background), I think the reported time and battery consumption is correct and match what I feel.

The percentage displayed in the battery usage screen can sometimes be misleading, as there are a couple calculations do be done with that number, in order to find out the total percent of your battery that MyFitnessPal has affected. The percentage displayed, is the percentage of battery that MyFitnessPal has consumed, of only the percentage of battery that has already been expended.
For example, if MyFitnessPal is listed as taking up 42% of your battery, and your battery is currently at 80%, MyFitnessPal has used 8.4% of your overall battery. In equation form, it looks like this: ((100-80)*.42) = 8.4
This means 100 percent (the fully charged battery), minus the amount of charge left (that’s 80 percent per the top of the screen) leaves us with the total amount of battery used — in this case, that’s 20 percent. Of that 20 percent that’s been used, 42 percent of that went to MyFitnessPal, meaning that 8.4 percent of a full charge has been used in the amount of time your device has been off the charger.
We hope this helps clarify the behavior of the MyFitnessPal app anyhow it appears on the battery screen on your device. We wish you the best of luck in meeting and maintaining all your fitness goals!

Hi Thank for you reply.
I probably provide too many information to let people understand my problem.
Depend on several tests and my experiments. I am almost sure the myfitnesspal consume my iphoneSE battery by an abnormal speed.
When I open myfitnesspal and use it for a while (around 10minutes), my iphone battery drop down around 10% (I do no think this a normal battery consumption speed) and I can clearly feel that my iphone become hotter and hotter.
are there any other users who reports this issue? Or do you know what the possible problem?
If you need me to do more test on my iphone to analyze this problem, I can do that.

Thanks for following up with us. So far we are unable to replicate the issue in test accounts on other iPhones. Please try uninstalling the app, power cycling your phone, turning it completely off and then back on again, and then reinstalling the app to see if that helps.

I try approach and test.
I close all app and only use myfinesspal for ten minutes. I keep browsing information in myfinesspal and editing food menu. The battery drop from 85% to 62% in 10 mins.
Any other suggestion or any thing to try and provide the information to you?

I have done that. It looks like that myfitnesspal send out some information from my iphone.....I do not clearly see the message because the message disappears too soon.

Thank for following up with us. Would you please try updating to app version 18.6.0, in the App Store, to see if that helps? When testing this version on an iPhone 5, we saw the battery drain 3% in 10 minutes with the MyFitnessPal app on the Diary screen continuously, without the display timing out. Comparatively, we saw a 2% drop with the Clock app’s timer counting down 10 minutes, and a 1% drop with the Calendar app open continuously for 10 minutes.

based on the tests in your reply, I also ran some tests.
I firstly define some terminologies I used here. Because I am not a english native speak, I might use some improper terms and confuse you.
1. "RESTART iphone": long press home and power button until my iphone turn off, then I press the power button to turn on the iphone SE.
2."CLOSE all apps": double click on the home button and swipe all existing apps to close all of them.
3. "WAIT for the battery percentage stable": after I RESTART iphone, I will MANUALLY turn off the screen and wait for about 5-10 minutes.
I guess iphone may need some time to correctly measure the battery percentage. I also guess iphone may load, run some thing and consume some power because I reboot it. So, I do not directly run next test. Instead, I wait for 5-10 minutes to make everything stable.
4. "IPHONE temperature": if I say, I feel the iphone temperature is hot or normal. I mean that I just use my hand to grip iphone to feel that.
I update all my apps, so I am using myfinesspal version 18.6.0.
And In "General -> Battery > Battery Health (beta) ", it show my battery capacity is 83%.
I did the following tests one by one. All battery percentage I report here is directly read from the right upper corner on the iphone screen.
And for the following test, I have turned off the screen auto-lock. Therefore, if I do not manually turn off the screen, the screen is always on.
Test1: I CLOSE all apps and RESTART iphone and WAIT for the battery pecentage stable. Now, the battery is 86%. I let my iphone show the home screen and wait for 10mins. The battery is still 86%. (the iphone temperature is normal)
Test2: I CLOSE all apps and thenI RESTART iphone and WAIT for the battery percentage stable. Now, the battery is 84%. I open myfinesspal and just one clikc on diary button and wait for 10mins. After 10mins, the battery is 54%. (the iphone temperature is hot)
Test3: I CLOSE all apps then I RESTART iphone and WAIT for the battery percentage stable. Now the battery is 71% (<--yes, weird here. I just reboot the iphone, the battery jump from 54% to 73 or 74%). Then I open iphone office calendar app and wait for 10 mins. After that, the battery is 71%. (the iphone temperature is normal)
Test4: I CLOSE all apps then I RESTART iphone and WAIT for the battery percentage stable. Now the battery is 67%. I decide to do a special test on myfitnesspal again. I will open it for 20mins and read the battery percentage every minute. The following is the results.
min 0: 67%
min 1: 67%
min 2: 67%
min 3: 62%
min 4: 55%
min 5: 49%
min 6: 43%
min 7: 37%
min 8: 33%
min 9: 30%
min 10: 28%
min 11: 28%
min 12: 28%
min 13: 28%
min 14: 28%
min 15: 28%
min 16: 28%
min 17: 28%
min 18: 28%
min 19: 28%
min 20: 28% <--yes, the battery does not drop any more from 10th minute.
However, I keep feeling my iphone is hot in this whole test.
Test5: I CLOSE all apps, then I RESTART iphone. When I just restart my iphone. I immediately read the battery, it is 42% (yes , it jump back again). I WAIT for the battery percentage stable. Now the battery is 32%. I open the iphone official clock app, and let it count down from 10mins. After 10mins, the battery is still 32%. (the iphone temperature is normal)
Test6: I CLOSE all apps then I RESTART iphone. When I just restart my iphone. I immediately read the battery, it is 32%. I WAIT for the battery percentage stable. Now the battery is 24%. I open FACEBOOK app for 10mins and do nothing. After 10mins, the battery is still 24% . (the iphone temperature is normal)
Test7: I decide to test myfinesspal again until my iphone turn off automatically. I CLOSE all apps then I RESTART iphone. When I just restart my iphone. I immediately read the battery, it is 24%. I WAIT for the battery percentage stable. Now the battery is still 24%. Here, I report the battery every 10mins.
10 mins: 15%
65mins: 0% (it automatically turn on and I cannot turn it on without charging it)
In this test, I still feel the iphone is hot.
These tests are done in around three hours and at the same location. The configuration of the iphone does not change in this whole testing process.
That is all tests I did. Hopefully, this is helpful for you to find the problem.

Thanks for following up with us KC. Are you seeing any increased data usage along with the battery drain or is it it just affecting the battery?
caseywang777 Jun 18, 2018 08:39PM PDT
I usually use wifi.....do you know whether it transfers significant amount of data?
caseywang777 Jun 19, 2018 09:17AM PDT
sorry ...wrong sentence...what I want to say is "I usually use wifi.....how can I know whether myfitnesspal transfers significant amount of data when I use it?"
Logan MyFitnessPal Agent Jun 19, 2018 01:20PM PDT
Thanks for following up with us. I’m not sure how to check for data usage over wifi, just cellular. We think we may have a lead though. Would you please check to see if the auto-play for blog videos setting is on. You can find it by opening the MFP app’s Menu, selecting Settings, followed by Sharing & Privacy, then Auto-Play Settings. If it is currently on, please try turning it off and then keeping an eye on the battery usage to see if there is any improvement.
caseywang777 Jun 19, 2018 04:59PM PDT
I check my setting and find that the "auto-play blog videos" is off. But, in the same page, I find that "auto-play newsfeed ads" is on. So, I turn "auto-play newsfeed ads" off and run the test.
(Test1) After I turn "auto-play newsfeed ads" off, and I let my iphone show "Diary" page for more than ten minutes, no battery percentage drop (82% -> 82%).
(Test2) Then, I turn "auto-play newsfeed ads" back and also let my iphone shows "Diary" page for 5 minutes, the battery drop from 81% to 61%.
(Test3) After test2, I immediately run test3 and do not close myfinesspal. I just turn "auto-play newsfeed ads" off again and back to diary page, and wait for 5 minutes. The battery percentage does not change (61%->61%)
I ran test 2 and test3 at the same location and almost the same time.
So, I guess the function to auto play newsfeed ads consumes the huge amount of battery in short time.
I think we have found why that happens.

Thanks for following up with us. I’ll pass the details on to our engineers. At least now they’ll know where to look. We really appreciate your assistance with the triage steps on your end KC, and especially your understanding though out this process. You’ve been very helpful in tracking down the source.
I’ll keep an eye on the service ticket and reach back out to you if they need any additional info.
caseywang777 Jun 19, 2018 11:46PM PDT
When I tested that this afternoon and if I turn off auto-play add, I will not see the ads in diary page and no battery drop.
Therefore, I thought that the "auto-play newsfeed ads" corresponds to the function to enable or disable the ads in the diary page. However, after I come back home tonight, even if I turn off auto-play newsfeed ads, the ads in diary page still keep showing. And now, the battery percentage drops very fast.
So, I guess the "auto-play newsfeed ads" does NOT correspond to the function to enable or disable the ads in the diary page. Is this right??
And, although I am not sure, I strongly feel that the ads in the diary page drop the battery fast. Please pass this information this to your engineers.
This also means that my problem is not solved now. Even if I turn off "auto-play newsfeed ads" now, the battery still keep dropping fast and I see the ads in the diary page.

I found that, if I turn my iphone to airplane mode, the battery drop stops. Hopefully, this information is useful.
