Garmin and MFP activity calories are subtracted from step calories jennybearlv — Feb 16, 2017 09:24PM PST

Since the 10th I've been having a problem where every time I recorded an activity either through MFP, strength training, or Garmin, running, the step calories I have collected throughout the day are zeroed out. I turned on negative adjustments to see what was happening and got this:

It looks like the activity is added into MFP and everything adds up, but then MFP and Garmin sync and the calories from that activity are subtracted from the step calories leaving me back with just the adjustment from my steps.

Please accept our apologies for any confusion surrounding your adjustment with Vivosmart. The Garmin Vivosmart is designed to track not only your daily activity level, but also your specific exercise activity. Since this tracks both, understanding how this translates when integrated with MyFitnessPal can be a bit confusing.

When you create your MyFitnessPal profile, we provide you with an “average” amount of “daily burn” calories based on the activity level you chose when you first created your account. Since this is an average, it will vary for each individual. Now that you have chosen to use Vivosmart, it should provide you with a more specific account of your daily activity.

Once Vivosmart is synced to MFP, your specific activity will then be compared with the activity amount we already provided. If you have burned more than we originally thought you would, you will receive additional credit in the form of a positive adjustment. If you end up burning less, and have also elected to have Negative adjustments enabled (please see article http://myfitnesspal.desk.com/customer/portal/articles/1084233-should-i-turn-on-negative-calorie-adjustments- if you’d like to learn more on negative adjustments) then MFP will take away provided calories from your daily goals to compensate for the overage we originally provided you.

The best way to understand how the calculation works is to tap on the adjustment in the app to view a breakdown of how the calories are compared. In that calculation you should see the following, an instant sync from Vivosmart, from the last time it synced to MyFitnessPal, this will have a time and number directly under the top line of the calculation page. This number should match the totals in your Garmin account.

Since Vivosmart gives you your precise calculations each minute of the day, and MyFitnessPal is providing you a total for the entire day, we use a formula to project what we feel your precise total will look like for the entire day with the Vivosmart, so we can compare two whole totals through out the day. This is why it is important to sync the programs as often as possible, so the projection can be as close as possible. At midnight, the projection should match your precise totals for Garmin. This is why it’s important to make sure Garmin and MyFitnessPal are running on the same time zone.

Looking at the adjustment breakdown, the projection total will be the number you see in the column to the right of the Vivosmart line. In order for there to be a positive adjustment, this number must be greater than the MyFitnessPal total calories provided number, which is found directly underneath.

The MyFitnessPal total represents your daily calories, the amount of calories needed for you to reach the goals you have elected with the program (for example lose 1 lb per week), as well as any calories instantly provided to you from exercise, including those that have synced from Vivosmart for your specific exercise.

We include your exercise calories in this total because our program instantly awards those to you in your diary, and in such, if you also received them as part of your adjustment total you would then be receiving double credit for them.

In conclusion, the best way to understand if you will receive an additional adjustment from your activity is if the projected calorie total from Garmin is greater than the provided calories from MyFitnessPal, if so, the difference will be your adjustment. Please remember, if you consumed the exact amount you earned with Vivosmart, then you would simply maintain your weight. The calculations MyFitnessPal provides will include those needed to reach the goals you have elected.

No, that is not what is happening. When I add an activity it adds it in, then a few moments later subtracts that exact same amount from my step calories. For instance, I have 50 step calories, then I go for a run and burn 500 calories. I enter the run and MFP says I've burned 550 calories, 500 for the run activity and 50 for the step activity. Then 30 seconds later it will say I've burned 500 for the run and -450 for step activity, leaving me back with 50 for my total daily activity calories.
