Private Groups are not visible adudda — Nov 16, 2017 08:32AM PST

I'm confused by the Private group setting. It specifically says, "Private. Anyone can see the group, but only members can see its content. People must apply or be invited to join." Yet, the group is not findable in searches so that people can apply for membership. It was at one time (as recently as 2 weeks ago when the group was first set up), but now, searches come up empty when looking for my group. Other support posts indicate that this is normal. Yet your UI indicates otherwise. Please make Private groups visible in the search list again. I would like to make a group available to a group of 50 people who could truly benefit from your product. But, with this broken feature, it will be far too much of a hassle for me to manage.

Hi there,

It is expected behavior that a private group will not be searchable. The group will appear under New Groups at first, but will be pushed down as other groups are created. You will need to send a link for the group to potential members and have them ask to be invited.

You can also set the group to public until your members join, and then set it to private once they have gotten in.

All the best,

Thanks for the response and clarification, Bruce. This doesn't address the actual verbiage on the UI which indicates otherwise. Anyone cannot see the group, contrary to what the option indicates. It's unfortunate, as this now makes it much too cumbersome to administer for my team.

Thanks for getting back to us. The phrase Private. Anyone can see the group, but only members can see its content. People must apply or be invited to join refers to that if provided with the link, anyone can see the private group and request to join, but they will need to be a member before they can view any content of that group. It does not refer to the ability of a group being seen in a search, where private groups will not be searchable.

We will definitely consider other options for the future in regards to private groups.
